I like Chris Bachalo,I really do.Strange that, because I didn’t used to.I don’t know what it was about the early 90’s that seemed to bring about a dearth of samey, scratchy art(visualised in many early Vertigo titles).Chris Bachalo, for me,was one such artist;his work in Shade the Changing man(1990)is not that pretty;maybe it just hasn’t aged well…
Then, however,I read Death:The High Cost of Living & Steampunk(written by Joe Kelly,2000).In these books,Chris really seemed to define his own style.
Though not as obviously street style as Humberto Ramos,Chris Bachalo’s art is still quite grafitti-esque,manga influenced and expressive.
Although having previously worked for DC/Vertigo(The Witching Hour by him and Jeph Loeb being a popular book for Vertigo),Bachalo now seems to work solely for Marvel, his work on various X-Men titles proving a big hit.
Yup,I like Chris Bachalo!
